Dr. Westwood has worked at Virginia Tech since 1994. He teaches Weed Science - Principles and Practices and Herbicide Action and Metabolism, and the online Weed Science and Management course.

He has research interests in the areas of parasitic weed biology, genetic engineering, herbicide resistance, and international agriculture. His research focuses on broomrape (Orobanche sp.), a plant that lives as an obligate parasite on the roots of many important vegetable and legume crops, thereby posing a serious threat to agriculture. His research projects also include molecular-level characterization of host response to parasitization, development of model systems for parasitic weed biology, and strategies to enhance host resistance to broomrape. He has additional interests in exotic, invasive weeds and in the implications of genetic engineering on agriculture. He is an active member of the Weed Science Society of America, the International Weed Science Society, and is an Associate Editor for the journal, Weed Science.

He earned a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, an M.S. in Plant Physiology from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota, and a B.A. in Biology from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota.
