Dr. Welbaum teaches Horticulture 4764, an undergraduate course on vegetable crops. He is the coordinator for the North American Mobility Program for Higher Education, which is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
He conducts innovative research on seeds and specifically the biology of seed germination and vigor. This research extends to the field and includes factors that affect the stand establishment of horticultural crops. His other interests include how seeds and plants adapt to environmental stress and naturally defend themselves against fungal attack. Soil microbial-plant interactions are a new area of interest.
He is collaborating with Dr. David Tay of the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center to study ways to best preserve orchid seeds. They are funded to develop synthetic rooting media for the rapid establishment of plants on rooftops, turf grass in disturbed areas, and high value crops. They also have a project to investigate the role of Bacillus megaterium on soil structure. He is also a member of the interdisciplinary "Smart Field" development team.
