Dr. Sumner is head of the Department of Food Science and Technology. She is a Fellow of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), a recipient of the IAFP Educator Award, and a recognized authority of food safety.
Her current research interests are control of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat meats, Salmonella Newport on tomatoes, and adhesion factors of E. coli O157:H7. Her educational programs are focused on food safety, HACCP; and recall plans and biosecurity issues for the food industry.
She received her Ph.D. in Food Science in 1987 from the University of Wisconsin, her M.S. in Food Science in 1984 from the University of Wisconsin, and her B.S. in Food Science in 1982 from North Carolina State University.
