Dr. Pfeiffer deals primarily with fruit IPM and ecological interactions in orchards, vineyards and small fruits. In recent years, his research has centered in the areas of mating disruption for lepidopteran pests, biogeography of plum curculio, and insect/plant interactions. His Extension activities include electronic dissemination of fruit IPM information through a website and e-mail lists, in addition to conventional Extension publications and grower meetings.
He serves as the Site Chair for Eastern Europe in the IPM CRSP (Collaborative Research Support Program), a USAID-funded project managed by Virginia Tech's Office of International Research and Development (OIRD). This involves several projects dealing with IPM in several high-value horticultural crops in Albania, Moldova and Ukraine.
He teaches the graduate courses Insect Structure and Function and Arthropod Pest Management as well as the undergraduate course Insect Pest Management.
Dr. Pfeiffer received his Ph. D. in Entomology from Washington State University in 1982, his M.S. in Entomology from North Carolina State University in 1978, and his B.S in Entomology from the University of Massachusetts in 1976.
