Dr. Paulson’s appointment is split between teaching and research. She teaches Medical and Veterinary Entomology, an upper level undergraduate class with laboratory, and Principles of Biology, a large enrollment freshman class. Besides interacting with undergraduate students in a traditional classroom setting, she is the academic advisor for 8-12 Biology students annually and a faculty facilitator for The First Year Experience, a course designed to help students make the transition from high school to college. She also supervises 2-3 undergraduates in research projects each year. Her graduate teaching responsibilities include teaching Insect Biosystematics, directing M.S. and Ph.D. student research, and serving on graduate student committees.
Her primary research interests are in the areas of mosquito biology and arbovirology. Specific projects examine behavioral and environmental risk factors for the La Crosse encephalitis virus and factors influencing the vector competence of mosquitoes for viruses. Additionally, she works with the Virginia Department of Health to develop and implement a statewide surveillance program for West Nile virus.
