Dr. Mullins primary responsibilities are research and teaching. He teaches courses in the life sciences, advises undergraduate biology major and entomology concentration students, and serves as a graduate student major advisor and as the Department of Entomology Graduate Student Coordinator. The courses he teaches include Life Sciences in the 21st Century, Pesticide Usage, Research and Information Systems in the Life Sciences, and Insect Physiology. His priorities for instruction include teaching and administering courses in a professionally competent manner, providing students with up-to-date information associated with appropriate topical areas, and developing new and novel instructional tools designed to enhance the learning process.
He conducts research in two general areas: insect physiology and biochemistry and pesticide disposal technology. His program goals are to conduct basic research on insect physiology and biochemistry, develop new approaches to formulation of insecticidal baits and biopesticides, and develop pesticide waste disposal and bioremediation systems that are safe, inexpensive, effective, and practical. Dr. Mullins also has responsibilities in maintaining the German Cockroach Genetic Stock Center.
He provides leadership in departmental, college, and university committees and in professional organizations. His international service includes assisting in developing and mentoring a pesticide residue laboratory in Mali, West Africa.
Dr. Mullins received his Ph.D. in Entomology in 1971 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia; his M.S. in Entomology in 1968 from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado; and his B.A. in Zoology in 1966 from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado.
