Ms. Merrill’s primary responsibilities are to serve the information needs of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, and Virginia Cooperative Extension.  These responsibilities include teaching classes on information literacy; providing reference and research assistance to the faculty, students, and staff; and selecting books and journals on the applied life sciences for the University Libraries collections.

In addition to these core activities, she has developed an online textbook in information literacy, The Information Skills Modules (http://info-skills.lib.vt.edu).   She is currently working with two pilot courses:  a Graduate Information Literacy course taught by the University Libraries and the University Core Curriculum Sequence on Earth Sustainability, an innovative approach to teaching the core curriculum at Virginia Tech.

She is active in library and university committees as well as professional organizations.  She serves on two library advisory boards for publishers of life science information and is a review editor for the Journal of Food and Agricultural Information.  In addition to working with student information literacy issues, she also works with information resources for sustainable agriculture.

She received her M.S. in agricultural economics from the University of Georgia, her M.A. in library science from the University of Denver, and her B.A. in philosophy from Converse College.  She also received a graduate certificate in environmental ethics from the University of Georgia.
