Description
Methods of plant disease management, and theories and effectiveness of their application. Discussion based on epidemiological principles. Methods include: cultural practices, resistance, chemical, and biological control. Laboratory 5214 supplements this course.
Prerequisites and Co-requisites
- One year of college biology.
- One course in general plant pathology or equivalent exposure.
- The student must be familiar with the general nature of plant pathogens, principles of disease diagnosis, and major aspects of diseases cycles and development. Web-based tutorials will be made available to allow students who have not had a previous plant pathology course to acquire sufficient background.
Learning Objectives
Having completed this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe and explain the biological and epidemiological principles that underlie the various plant disease management strategies.
- List and describe the full range of options for plant disease management strategies and tactics, and link their applicability, effectiveness, and limitations to the characteristics of specific plant diseases or cropping situations.
