Description

Principles, tools, and techniques of disease detection, early warning, and containment of animal and plant pathogens. Regulatory agencies and guidelines used to ensure the biosafety and biosecurity of the U.S. food supply from accidental introductions and potential bioterrorism.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites

Some prior knowledge of biotechnology will be assumed in this course. ALS 5044 (Biotechnology in Agriculture and Society), or an equivalent course, will provide such background.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Outline the functions of the laws and regulatory agencies involved in biosafety and biosecurity of disease organisms relative to trade, research, and education.
  2. Discuss animal and plant health monitoring and early detection methods.
  3. Explain containment procedures for plant and animal pathogens.
  4. Describe the biology of selected animal and plant pathogens.
