Description

Students will develop competencies in the development and direction of community volunteer partnerships and collaborations. Students will explore current volunteer development models, collaboration process theory, and key management areas including: visioning; organizing a partnership or collaboration; creating motivating volunteer positions; recruiting, screening, and interviewing; orientation and training; supervising; evaluation, retention and recognition; group process/facilitation; conflict resolution; risk management; and measuring program effectiveness.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Describe current volunteer development models and the collaboration process.
  2. Demonstrate the effective use of conflict management and communication strategies.
  3. Develop an action plan for creating a shared vision in an organization.
  4. Articulate a plan for organizing community partnerships/collaborations.
  5. Design motivating volunteer positions and determine how to effectively recruit volunteers to fill the positions.
  6. Evaluate and select methods to screen and interview prospective volunteers.
  7. Develop a plan to orient, train, and supervise volunteers and groups including strategies for retaining and recognizing volunteers and fostering positive volunteer/staff relations.
  8. Develop risk management strategies and procedures.
  9. Conduct and analyze methods of evaluation to assess collaborative program effectiveness.
